Each piece of our hand hammered stainless steel tableware is meticulously shaped by skilled artisans in a workshop located outside Bangkok, Thailand. Starting with a flat, unpolished sheet of stainless steel, the craftsman begins hammering and very gradually, using a series of hammers of different sizes, he transforms that flat sheet into the desired shape. Even a simple piece such as a tray might require hours of such hammering until, finally, when it has acquired exactly the desired features, it is ready for the polishing station where it will be given its mirror-like finish. To commemorate very special occasions we can now offer custom laser engraving of our hand hammered stainless steel tableware. Please contact us ([email protected]) for information about custom laser engraving of your stainless steel gift.

Our handwoven Cambodian silk scarves are produced by a fourth generation master weaver in a remote village in eastern Cambodia. The scarves are woven on traditional wooden looms standing directly on the ground under her house which, as is the case with most houses in the Cambodian countryside, is elevated on stilts. Beginning with washing and drying the raw silk, then spinning the yarn, setting the loom, weaving the silk fabric, braiding the fringe of each scarf and, finally, washing and ironing the finished scarves, the many steps in the process of creating one of these beautiful woven treasures requires our team of several specialized craftspeople more than three months to complete. The use of contrasting warp and weft thread colors gives our scarves their unique iridescence which is especially pronounced when viewed in natural light.
Every product has a story.

Our smocked dresses for girls are expertly sewn and hand smocked in a program for disadvantaged but highly skilled women in Bangkok, Thailand. For nearly forty years, those women have been making these dresses in classic styles and for more than twenty years Kasumisou Gallery has been proudly presenting these beautiful hand smocked dresses to our customers in the U.S. and Japan. Both the sewing and the smocking are done with great attention to detail and, on many styles, the hand smocking alone can require nearly two full days of painstaking work. In addition to our Princess Charming® hand smocked dresses, the approximately one hundred and twenty highly skilled but extremely disadvantaged women in that program make our quilted holiday trays, our Plaid Lad® and Pocket pal® bears and bunnies and our cotton Zip-it® totes.

The photo directly above shows a skilled Edo-sarasa silk artisan in Japan as he inserts bamboo spreaders to stretch the silk taut – preparing it for the addition of the next layer of color. Each piece of Edo-sarasa silk measures 13 meters in length – providing enough silk to produce a single kimono. The highly skilled artisan must add each color in the pattern separately, allowing time for the new color to dry thoroughly before the next layer of color can be added. The pattern in any Edo-sarasa silk design is created using a set of stencils made from paper or leather.
