Our lantern-style 14kt gold pendants are available as a small lantern katah style bead or as a larger lantern style pendant with tassels. Both styles are made of 14kt gold and are available with a choice of four gemstones: ruby, emerald, sapphire or diamond. Our lantern style pendants may be purchased alone or with an 18kt gold chain: 16 in. or 18 in. Note: both bead and pendant require a fairly thin chain with an end piece small enough to fit through the bead (small lantern) or the loop on the large lantern.

About Cambodian katah (prayer beads). Today in Cambodia, a wealthy woman might wear a single gold katah as a necklace. More commonly, though, a Cambodian woman of more modest means might wear several or many silver katah on a cord around her waist and hidden under her garments. According to tradition, a Khmer (Cambodian) woman would seek the blessings of a Buddhist monk who would copy ancient scripture onto small bits of palm leaf, silver, or more recently, paper. These writings were then rolled up and inserted into a katah made, depending on the woman’s economic status, from clay, bamboo, lead, silver or gold. After that, each monk would add his personal “magic” through a prayer offering.
